Moshi, Tanzania: Some Mount Kili and Some Education
We arrived at our next stop in Tanzania, Moshi from Arusha via a tourist bus. However once we got there, we needed to take a Dala Dala up to Marangu within Moshi to get to our hotel, The Babylon Lodge – which stands on the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. The hotel was only 5km from the Kilimanjaro National Park and we had booked a DAY HIKE on Kili – pathetic, I know, through the hotel.
After the hike and stay Babylon Lodge, we decided to stay closer to Moshi city at a hotel, Honey Badger Lodge, that was touted as an educational center and a place doing great things for local people. They had many on premise activities in which locals could benefit from teaching classes. I signed us up for an African cooking class and African dance lesson, which I was really excited about. On our arrival, we noticed what an oasis the lodge was. It had a large pool, a cool bar and gardens to sit or nap. Our room was huge and spotless and somehow they were able to make the mosquito nets look exotic and romantic. Straight away, we also noticed the lodge’s commitment to conservation and it’s community. The whole lodge is powered by solar energy with solar panels on roofs, and they explained to us how they harvest the rain water and compost our waste. Very Califorgeon
- We also were enveloped by their commitment to their community. There was a shop on premise where they sold items made from local people. Within our rooms, our curtains and even the hand soap was made by a local women’s/girl’s organization which help to lead them into financially independent lives. The lodge also encourages guests to offer feedback on items and how else this organization can get it’s products to others. It just made you feel good to be there. If you are ever in Moshi, hiking Kili or wanting a safari, we HIGHLY recommend this place. Here is more about it: http://www.honeybadgerlodge.com/giving-back.aspx
That night we didn’t get the African dance lesson we had expected but instead we danced among African dancers, singers and drummers. I know the dancers were impressed by my skills
Let’s see, where should I start…..the interesting photos of the Honey Badger Lodge (loved your room), the cooking lessons and delicious food photos, the dancing or those AMAZING ELEPHANT crops you are wearing!! Loved it all!!
I expect you to cook us an African meal upon your return.
so basically you’re saying that honey badger DOES give a shit…
haha.. yes, at least one does! They actually had shirts with sayings to that effect, but I couldn’t tell if they named the hotel because of the video or it was just luck.
