Zadar and the Sea Organ
Our next city was a quick stop in Zadar, our first town on the Adriatic. We stopped there for a few hours on our drive to Split. It was typical of the other Croatian towns on the coast that we would visit later – a central Roman town with small marble streets, 2-3 story buildings lining the streets with shops and restaurants, and a number of squares within the town lined with outdoor cafes. Zadar is on the smaller end of those cities, which made it a nice introduction.
I loved walking the lively streets, even if the shops were mainly geared towards a higher class of clientele. I was really struck by the fact that even though it was a tourist mainstay, the town felt authentic, with us tourists merely as observers of the local town, not the reason for the town.
Our favorite sight in Zadar was the Sea Organ. It is a collection of pipes under the far corner of Zadar’s sea walk. When the waves crash against the wall, they force air through the pipes, creating an organ effect that lets out low groans and moans. It’s eery at first, but then very cool to sit and relax while watching the Agean waves crash against the wall while “making” the low musical notes from the organ.
