Hungarians and Ice Cream
Hungarians love their ice cream. Although we’ve found the treat to be popular all over Eastern Europe, in Hungary in particular the streets are filled with stands and stores selling different types of ice cream, and during the afternoon it is common to see the majority of people strolling with a cone.
The popularity and ubiquity of the treat mean that Budapest has a number of oddly specific “no ice cream” signs – in addition to any signs prohibiting food – on stores and public transit.
It’s also not the only sign we found funny for its specificity – apparently there’s an epidemic in Hungary of people throwing bottles out the windows of trains, but not much else!
Jami, however, hasn’t minded the ubiquity of the ice cream stores…
